resignation of steve jobs. good morning, tara. >> reporter: apple investors seem to be getting over that initial announcement. shares are under 2%. jobs has developed a cult-like following. >> reporter: jobs not only founded -- cofounded apple and the personal computer industry but decades later he played a key role in revaling music. product launches generate hype. with jobs leaving, they have confidence in the executive board but wonder who will replace his creative genius. tim cook will take the helm.

you can find it at ktvu.com. shares of bank of america are soaring after berkshire hathaway invested $5 billion. he said he considers b of a a strong company with good leadership. bank of america stock jumped 24% at the opening bell. right now it is up 18%. at this hour, the threat of hurricane irene is forcing the u.s. navy to move ships in virginia further out to sea. irene is over the northwestern section of the bahamas. it has already destroyed 90% of the homes and two settlements. it as a new report that indicates eye reason has caused -- irene has caused $3 billion.

pressure tests. thousands of people are returning home now that a tanker fire near sacramento is under control. firefighters were able to con stain the potential fire overnight. >> reporter: let me give you a live look at where we are. this is that tanker that was on fire. there was no flame to speak of. this fire officially burning itself out about 3:35 this morning. take a look again. this was the scene over the last 39, 40 hours of a huge flame burning propane. yesterday there was talk of a bold maneuver to drill a hole in the bottom of the tanker as it's on fire, to drain the propane out and set a pond where it would be draining. that never happened because as crews were preparing for the maneuver they realized this

payments president the audit found the state lands commission has not evicted businesses that failed to pay repetitive for many years. according to the audit one business, crockett in contra costa county has not paid repetitive to the state since 1989 and owes or than $660,000. the state tax board is exam examining -- examining records to get taxes. california law requires residents to pay use tax on out of state purchases. some local government officials think the state is passing the buck on to counties in dealing with crowded prisons.

jail this morning, suspected of running an operation that made fake driver's licenses and credit cards. christopher mathison was arrested by sonoma county sheriff's deputies. detectives found various materials used to make counterfeit licenses and credit cards. mathison is being held. a san francisco woman accused of taking her daughter to a movie while drunk and crashing her car, police say this happened in the north garage of the century 20 movie theater in d daly city. the mother had vodka in her body when she took her daughter to wn email outage affecting some 200 workers at san francisco city hall. the problem occurred one week ago and affected workers in

several city departments including the human rights commission investigators said the outage was a result of the city switching over to a new email system and there have been no problems sense last week. several community groups are suing the city in a battle over cable bosms. they are attempting to stop or slow down at&t's plan to install 700 u verse boxes. city planners say such a report is not necessary. the boxes will house equipment for digital tv, phone service and high speed internet. critics say the cable boxes are eyesores. despite loud criticisms, bart will continue to cut off cell phone service when it deems this necessary. during a three-hour hearing bart said it will device a policy outlining when it will turn off

we'll have more on that in a moment. the other big news, warren buffett to invest $5 billion in bank of america. that stock up 14%. apple stock down 2% after the news about steve jobs, actually down 1 1/2% and gold is down 2 1/2% at $1712 an ounce. the dow down 130. s&p down 11. the strike by verizon workers boosted those filing for unemployment the applications rose to 417,000, up 5,000 from the week before. 80 filed for unemployment been fits. he is one of the great innovatetors of all times. now steve jobs is walking away from his day-to-day duties at apple. pam cook has a look back at his

ground break career. >> reporter: steve jobs created the legacy, who swore by mac since it was introduced. that commercial probably had something to do with apple and the company being looked at as a cult. that commercial then turned into what is now macworld. his presentations have been nothing short of an entrance of a rock star. most software were written for pc's. it wasn't until jobs introduced the new ipod that apple started moving into mainstream. two years later the format changed computers and music for ever. every year after that we've seen

another east porksd then the iphone and lines out the door of every apple store which continues today as people try to get their hands on the latest ipad. apple stock shot up and hovered near $25 a share. it's now $400 a share now. now steve jobs' health has topped the news. he and his company kept his medical problems private. we know they go back at least seven years. in tower jobs had surgery for rare but a treatable form of pancreatic cancer. in 2008 he appeared visibly thinner and joked that reports of his death were greatly exaggerated. then in 2009 he said he had a hormone imbalance and took a leave of absence.

there were 107 people on board. they were flying in from chicago. most had already deplaned, as they say, because the two people involved, a passenger and the captain of the plane. as we flow captains are usual lit last to leave. apparently these two stepped foot on the platform which is the entry. once they stepped there, the entire thing collapsed, landing on the tarmac. little damage was done to the 737 as well. that was towed away. as far as the people, they had a little damage, also. their injuries were considered quite minor. this were complaining about neck and back pain and pain in their ankles. they were taken to a hospital, treated and released. american airlines said they were looking into this. at that point in the evening the spokesperson said she wasn't sure if it was the responsibility of the american airlines or the responsibility of l.a.x.

in march the u.n. froze the libyan assets to pressure moammar gadhafi to stop attacking the libyan people. also, we're following developing news out of libya. rebels said they may have found moammar gadhafi. they believe gadhafi and his sons are inside. again, this is only a report as of right now. yesterday the antigovernment rebels told reporters in treppe powly they thought they had found gadhafi but it turned out that was not true. the rebel leadership offered a $2 million bounty for the capture of gadhafi, dead or alive. >> moammar gadhafi's spokesman said gadhafi is in libya and is leading the fight against the rebels, so conflicting statements. >> a war of words. a 10-year-old murder investigation is now closed.

our reporter is in lincoln right now to tell us how the firefighters did it. how did they contain that potentially explosive thing overnight, mike? >> reporter: it was really luck. there's no flames now. there was a bold plan to drill a local in the bottom of this propane tanker truck to basically drain all of the liquid propane out and set a separate bigger fire nearby but as crews were working to begin that daring process, they realized there was not as much propane inside as first feared. really, they were able to allow this fire to burn itself out. now this morning we are learning new information about the investigation here. that is the fact that the fire chief of lincoln tells us that what started this was a worker on top of that tanker car. he was looking at an inspection

inspection -- pipe. as help went to undo that he realized gas under pressure and it was not supposed to be there at that top cap. we do not know what the spark was but we do know that this was the undoing of that top cap when there was a realization that there was gas under pressure in an area it was not supposed to be. so fire investigators will be looking into why that was. they say it's possible a valve was left over that wasn't supposed to be. the lincoln fire department said this will be contacting the federal railroad association as well as the national transportation association, both to see if they want to be a part of the evaluation and to try to answer the question to prevent what they had here which, for the better part of 40 hours was

fairfield at 61, one of the few locations. here's an update on hurricane irene moving into the bahamas producing very heavy rainfall and some powerful winds. the winds 115 miles an hour offing -- moving to the northwest. the hurricane center has backed off a little bit on the intensity. no long area category four but a category three approaching the north carolina coastline. it's on track to move to the north and east and weaken rapidly. we're talking about a minimal hurricane or tropical storm as it approaches new york or boston. we'll keep an eye on it. back here in the bay area temperatures continue to cool off, especially for the beaches, partly sunny skies right around the bai. temperatures, increasing sunshine. temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 80s. a touch cooler for your friday.
